PIERS —— A global symposium committed to
advancing photonics and electromagnetics for the benefit of humanity.
Microwave remote sensing missions such as SMAP, CYGNSS, SWOT, NISAR, HydroGNSS, CRISTAL, ROSE-L, and others are impacted by Earth’s surface roughness when attempting to retrieve geophysical information. The use of models for surface scattering effects is crucial in compensating these effects and in understanding surface roughness contributions to observed backscattering, near specular scattering, and thermal emission. This session seeks submissions that contribute to 1) improving our understanding and ability to model surface roughness effects in microwave remote sensing from spaceborne, airborne and ground based systems 2) compensating or using surface scattering effects in ocean, land and cryosphere property retrievals 3) emerging rough surface scattering problems and potential advancements
